7 surprising stats – Glasgow Warriors (post Munster)

The unpredictable nature of the 2015/16 season lends itself perfectly to the return of the rugby nerd’s favourite – it’s 7 Surprising Stats!

1. Debut deja vu:

Against Munster on 19th February, Cameron Fenton became the 18th player to make his first appearance for Glasgow this season. One third of the 54 players used in 2015/16 have been Warrior virgins.

2. Three score of scorers:

Sila Puafisi’s double at Rugby Park made him the 60th player to score for Glasgow under the tenure of head coach Gregor Townsend. Almost a quarter of those scorers have been front rowers (14 in total) – which leads us smoothly on to…

3. Front row try frenzy:

With at least 9 games remaining in the season Glasgow’s props and hookers have combined for no less than 9 tries. This is the most that the big lads who hold up the scrum have scored in any campaign in the club’s history.

4. Amplifying attendances:

Despite all the issues this season (favourite sons departing, Scotland players missing up to a dozen games, 4 postponements, 3 games played away from Scotstoun) crowd numbers have continued to rise. 70,425 fans have passed through the gates giving the Warriors an average attendance over 7,000 (their highest ever). With 4 games remaining the total could come very close to 100,000 for Glasgow’s regular season fixtures.

5. Try for bonuses:

The bonus point win against Munster was the 25th in the Pro 12 for Gregor Townsend (79 games played). Only Leinster (with 28) have managed more 5-point victories since 2012/13.

6. Minimum return:

Glasgow have collected 5 losing bonus points so far in 2015/16 (meaning they’ve taken points from all but one of their league matches). This is the most they have taken from any Pro 12 season. They’ve also been involved in another 4 games where the opposition have picked up a LBP, plus a draw. The theme for this campaign is – fine margins.

7. Stunning strike rate:

The player with the best strike rate in the Townsend era isn’t DTH van der Merwe. It’s not even Niko Matawalu or Taqele Naiyarovoro. In fact it is…drumroll please…Glenn Bryce – he just can’t stop scoring!
