Warriors Champions Cup squad 2016/17

With 10 days to go until the opening fixture Glasgow Warriors have named their squad for this season’s Champions Cup tournament. Here’s a quick summary of who’s in and who’s out:

Squad composition – 2015/16 v 2016/17

LH prop:       4 v 3
Hooker:        4 v 4
TH prop:      2 v 3
Locks:          5 v 4
BS flanker:  2 v 1
OS flanker:  3 v 4
Number 8:   3 v 4

Scrum half:  3 v 4
Stand off:     2 v 1
Centre:          5 v 5
Wing:             6 v 5
Full back:      2 v 2

Total:           41 v 40

Given that the competition rules allow for a maximum squad of 41 (and all Glasgow’s pool rivals have named that number of players) it may be that there is either a name missing or the Warriors are hoping to add someone once their fitness is confirmed. The players from the full time pro squad who have missed out as things stand are:

Prop – Djustice Sears-Suru
Prop – Jarrod Firth
Lock – Scott Cummings (injured)
Back row – Hugh Blake (loan / injured)
Back row – Adam Ashe (injured)
Stand off – Rory Clegg
Centre – Richie Vernon (injured)
Centre – Fraser Lyle
Wing – Junior Bulumakau

The rules allow for 3 changes to the squad during the group stage (and a further 3 during the knockouts) so the door isn’t closed for these players. At least 1 of these replacements must be a prop or hooker so it makes sense that Gregor Townsend has only named the minimum 10 front row players as it will be straightforward to add DSD or Jarrod Firth if they are required.

With 4 of the locks names in the squad on the injured list as of last weekend Bob Harley may well be on second row duty for the first 2 rounds of the competition. With no other cover named here though it does suggest the club must expect all these players back before the double header against Racing 92 in December.

It has been clear from the early part of the season that the pecking order at 10 runs Russell – Horne – Clegg, but this selection puts Stuart Hogg in position as the number 3 number 10 in this group. Will Pete Horne’s hand be ready in time for Leicester? Or will the Warriors face a major reshuffle if Finn Russell has to go off?
