Glasgow Greetings:

Scotstoun gets to welcome back no less than five of its favourite sons after extended absences. Ali Price, Sam Johnson, Tommy Seymour and Stuart Hogg return to home turf for the first time since the Champions Cup match against Cardiff Blues on 13th January. Jonny Gray hasn’t played in Glasgow during 2019. It will be great to see that quintet run out at home again.

Matchday Milestones:

A little over 7 years since he made his debut as a fresh-faced 18 year old Jonny Gray will become the 46th player to join the Warrior Centurions. It seems a long time since he was just Richie’s wee brother to the Warriors’ faithful – he’s stepped out of his sibling’s (very large) shadow and carved a place in Glasgow history all of his own.

Warrior to Watch:

It has to be that man Jonny Gray on a special night in his Warriors’ career. Across his 99 appearances so far for the club Jonny has played 6,989 minutes of game time and made 1,207 tackles, missing just 25(!) for a tackle completion percentage of 98.0% and an average of 14.1 tackles attempted per 80 minutes.

The younger Gray has set an exceptionally high standard in terms of his consistency, application and work rate and Glasgow have been fortunate to have him in their squad for the last seven seasons.

Glasgow at home to Ulster in the PRO12/14 era:

  • 5 wins
  • 1 loss
  • 2 Try BPs
  • 1 Losing BP
  • 23 points out of a possible 30 (77%)

Previous match-up:

Officials:

Referee: Stuart Berry (SARU, 23rd Championship game)
AR1: Mike Adamson (SRU)
AR1: Ian Kenny (SRU)
TMO: Charles Samson (SRU)

Mr. Berry’s regular season record for 2017/18 in the PRO14:

Matches – 12 (all refs – 147)
Average penalty count – 19.4 per game (all refs – 19.0)
Home penalty percentage – 50% (all refs – 53%)
Average card count – 1.1 per game (all refs – 0.9)
Penalties per card – 19 (all refs – 22)

This will be Mr. Berry’s third visit to Scotstoun during his time in the PRO14. His Danes Drive debut saw him hammer the Warriors 15-9 in the crime count in a game against Leinster. Things went a bit better for the home side when the South African whistler took charge when they tackled the Dragons earlier this season – Glasgow only conceded 6 penalties to the visitors’ 12. Hopefully the latter match is more in line with how things run for Friday night’s fixture!
