Need to Know: Glasgow Warriors v Munster, PRO14 match preview 2020/21

KO 8.15 at Scotstoun Stadium
Monday 23rd November 2020

Live on Premier Sports 1

  • Glasgow’s selection meeting for this game must have been pretty straightforward with just 23 of the current full-time squad available.
  • Loan signings TJ Ioane, Lewis Bean as well as Scotland 7s’ Robbie Fergusson and Super 6 player Caleb Korteweg have been added to the mix to fill gaps.
  • The vagaries of the conference system, fixture scheduling and coronavirus mean that it has been more than two years since these teams last played each other.
  • Grant Stewart and Rob Harley are the only Warriors’ starters who were in the XV last time they met Munster.
  • The near-invisible Tom Gordon is the Warrior to Watch

Glasgow Greetings:

Home debuts for Lewis Bean and Caleb Korteweg who sadly won’t get to experience the famous East Stand Massive welcome (yet). Robbie Fergusson has had to wait more than 5 years between appearances at Scotstoun for Glasgow but that’s topped by the 7½ year hiatus between Warriors’ home games for Sean Kennedy!

Warriors to Watch:

Even during a challenging spell for Glasgow, Tom Gordon has been in impressive form. The king of mullets has been leading the charge defensively for the club, putting his body on the line time and time again to make tackles, with a high count and an excellent completion percentage.

There’s been a big step up in his work at the breakdown too where he has been contributing crucial turnovers. All of this while staying under the ref’s radar. As honest as the day is long, Tom is making the Glasgow number 7 shirt his own and could push on for Scotland caps in the not too distant future.

Glasgow at home to Munster in the PRO12/14 era:

  • 5 wins
  • 3 losses
  • 3 try BPs
  • 2 losing BPs
  • 25 points out of a possible 40 (62%)

Previous match-up:

Officials:

Referee: Adam Jones (WRU, 5th competition game)
AR1: Ben Blain (SRU)
AR2: Finlay Brown (SRU)
TMO: Sam Grove-White (SRU)

Mr Jones’ regular season record for 2019/20 in the PRO14:

Matches – 2 (all refs – 101)
Average penalty count – 22.0 per game (all refs – 19.1)
Home penalty percentage – 55% (all refs – 48%)
Average card count – 1.0 per game (all refs – 1.3)
Penalties per card – 22 (all refs – 15)

It’s been a while since Glasgow had a new ref to get used to but Mr Jones will be first-timer after making his league debut in August. The 27-year old Welsh whistler is younger than the majority of the Warriors’ line-up and it will be interesting to see how he tries to stamp his authority on the game.
